Stair Carpet Estimator
Estimate carpet or runner material for a staircase using stair count, tread depth, riser height, stair width, and optional landing coverage.
Limitations: Ignores nosings, scotia/underlay, custom wrap patterns (waterfall vs. cap-and-band), pattern-match repeat, and stair seams. Winders, pie stairs, and open-sided stairs typically need more material than a rectangular estimate.
What to do next: Measure tread depth from the nose to the next riser, and riser height floor-to-floor. For patterned carpet add 10–15% waste to match repeats. Runner-style installs usually subtract 3–6 inches from the stair width for an exposed border.
Planning estimate only. Confirm dimensions on-site and follow the carpet manufacturer's installation instructions.
