Display Size & Viewing Distance Planner
Given a display diagonal and aspect ratio, returns the SMPTE-recommended (30° FOV) and THX-recommended (36° FOV) viewing distances. Use these as the bounds for conference-room, classroom, or home-theatre seating design.
Limitations: Single-display planning. For video walls, flat-vs-curved assumptions, OLED vs. LCD pixel-structure visibility, and legibility for text/content rather than video, adjust the target FOV toward the THX side for closer seating.
What to do next: 4K/UHD content supports closer-than-SMPTE seating without resolving pixels; the THX distance is the tight bound most modern installations use. For purely text-heavy content (code reviews, engineering drawings), increase the target FOV or use a dedicated size-for-readability calculation.
