Estimate decking board count, joists, and fasteners for a rectangular deck based on deck dimensions, board width, and joist spacing.
Limitations: Assumes a simple rectangular deck with boards running parallel to the length. Picture frames, diagonal patterns, inset patterns, cantilevers, stairs, and railings are NOT included.
What to do next: Standard composite deck boards are 5.5 in wide with 1/8 in gap. Pressure-treated 5/4 × 6 boards are ~5.5 in actual. For diagonal patterns add 15% waste. Code typically requires 16 in joist spacing for residential decks.
Planning estimate only. Final takeoff should account for beams, posts, ledger boards, stairs, and railing — confirm with local code and the decking manufacturer's installation span tables.
